If you’re not from here you might ask “what is it?” I’ll tell you – it’s God’s version of the purple European grape given to Southerners.  Found draped across the branches of our mixed hardwood and pine tree forests, this native grapevine is a fruit basket for both animals and humans alike. Everybody and everything fights for “monkey dimes” in late summer. Our jelly, of course, comes from our vineyard, but many childhood years were spent shaking the vines and climbing trees to gather this regional fruit.  For some, muscadine is the favorite childhood flavor because they grew up on “high ground” rather than bottomlands where mayhaws ranged.
